Academy Schools   CHELTENHAM and GLOUCESTERSHIRE are leading the way with schools converting to academy status, with nationally 801 schools in July had converted which is one fifth of all secondary schools. Many schools in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire are in the process of converting to academy status with another 28 schools in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire which have recently converted to academies.

In April five Schools in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire converted to Academy Status Cirencester Deer Park, The Crypt, Chosen Hill Cheltenham and the High School for Girls in Stroud, all became fully independant from local authority allowing them to set their own pay and conditions for staff, and these school s are joining  a growing list of schools converting to Academy status and taking control of their own budgets.

Robinswood School's was  the first primary school in the county to be given Academy Status, and another 23 schools have converted or in the process of becoming academies by 1st January 2012.

Six primary schools in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire are currently in the process of to converting to Academies in 2012, including Longlevens Junior School, Powells  C of E and Stow-on-the-Wold  Primary, Bourton-on-the-Water Primary Junior, Blockley C of E, St Davids  , this is a higher conversion rate to that  in neighbouring authorities. In Gloucestershire  there has been a higher conversion rate than in Herefordshire,  Bristol and Worcestershire.

Academies are publicly funded independent schools, free from local authority and national Government control. Other freedoms include setting their own pay and conditions for staff and setting the curriculum. They're also able to change the length of their terms and school days, conversion can also bring some financial benefits to local authorities too.

Becoming an academy will help school's long term ability to decide their own future, bring more freedom and stability and reduce the amount of time spent on paperwork.

Sir Thomas Rich's Grammar school in Gloucester was among one of the first to convert and has been glad they have done so along with Pate’s Grammar school in Cheltenham and the Cotswold School in Bourton-on-the-Water, who were also one of the first secondary schools in Gloucestershire to become an Academy under the Coalition Government last year. Other Secondary schools such as, Bournside school and Pittville secondary schools in Cheltenham and Kingshill in Cirencester and Farmor's in Fairford  have all recently gained academy status.

Farmor's school Fairford is one of the secondary schools who converted to an Academy on the 1st August 2011 along with Sir William Romley’s School, Pitville school and Thomas Keblein Stroud.

The Department of Education Figures released recently show that there are 801 Academies (July 2011) these include Academies which opened under the previous government, are now open in England, there are still several Cheltenham and Gloucestershire schools that are in the pipeline to convert to Academies.

Changing to Academy status will give schools more independence and freedom. Teachers and head teachers will be able to do what’s best for their schools.  Academy status will help lead to stronger, more independent schools, in Cheltenham and in Gloucestershire.

It is expected that with so many schools in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire converting to academy status it will not be long before many more primary and secondary schools in Cheltenham will follow suit very shortly, once the benefits have been realised, and for those schools prepared to put in the time research and efforts to do so, they will soon start to reap the benefits from converting to academy status, in reality the school will not change a great deal, but will be more in control of their own schools future, and funding and will not be governed by Gloucestershire County Council, giving schools more freedom to control how the school is run, and enabling more outside resources to be brought in.

For employees at the schools it is more about protecting their jobs, pay and terms and conditions and knowing that changing status will not affect individuals.

Good stuff in my view 371 secondary hclooss are now academies – 11 per cent of all secondary hclooss in England. 204 academies have opened since September 2010 under the Coalition Government, with 46 opening this week alone. Of these, 136 were hclooss converting to becoming academies that will now use their academy freedoms to support weaker hclooss. Sixty-eight were weaker hclooss that had been granted academy status and new sponsors to help them turn round underperformance.
