Bethany's Story...Bethany Fenton born on the 21st of August 2004
Bethany is a local little girl who has just started school in September
A campaign was launched in September 2009 to raise money towards sending Bethany for treatment which could only be carried out in the USA, unfortunately it now looks like alternative treatment will need to be sought to help treat Bethany.
The local comminity have started fund raising, with the help of the local schools, and the fire brigade who have held a climb up the fire engines ladders at the local firestation in Fairford in order to raise money. Waitroses in are also helping donated money by giving customers tokens to donate to one of theis 3 chosen charities, for which Bethany's appeal has achieved the higest t number so far.
Bethany was first diagnosed with a Grade ¾ Anaplastic, Astrocytoma brain tumour on the 16th January 2009. Nine months ago warning bells alarmed when she was unable to use her right hand correctly.
Bethany then had a biopsy the following week which confirmed that a tumour had grown inside her brain. Unfortunately due to the size of the tumour, an operation could not take place. She started 6 weeks of Chemotherapy and then Radiotherapy the following month.
Bethany had a second MRI scan on the 10th of September; results showed that the tumour had grown, which meant the radiotherapy had not worked. The doctors will be meeting on Thursday 17th September to see if any other treatment is available in terms of Chemotherapy; but there is no treatment in the terms of radiotherapy available in this country.
Proton Beam Therapy could be the only chance Bethany now has, however there is only one Proton Centre in the UK (based in Liverpool) but this unfortunately can only deal with eye treatment as the lasers are not powerful enough for brain tumours etc. Therefore we must look overseas for this form of treatment; the main centre for this is in Boston, USA. Sean Fenton (father) has spoken to the doctors in Boston and they have requested to see her records, to see if they can offer her the Proton Therapy Treatment; although they may not be able to because of the Radiotherapy Bethany has already undertaken. Costing for this type of treatment could be anything up to $150,000.
Family and Friends have now started to fundraise in hope that Bethany can receive the treatment that she needs to ensure she is with all of us for years to come.
