Cheltenham Gold Cup is the most exciting race week of the National Hunt Calender held annually in March as a 4 day event. The 2012 Festival will be held from Tuesday 13th March - Friday 16th March. Cheltenham race festival is simply the highlight of the jump racing season. This year's Centenary Festival 1911 - 2011 promises to be as exciting as the last, although health and safety will be paramount following the recent incident at Newbury Racecourse where 2 horses reared up and died in the parade ring just minutes before the start of the race. It is believed both horses suffered sever electric shocks from underground cables where drilling had taken place previously, fortunately the stables boys leading the horses round the parade were unharmed. The horses killed were Fenix Two, a six-year-old, and Marching Song, a five-year-old, The race was abandoned and an immediate enquiry was ordered to ascertain the cause of the tradgedy, it is hope the Cheltenham Festival week will have no such incident and will be full of atmosphere and great excitement as the 27 races or run over the 4 day festival.

While there is no dress code for the Cheltenham Festival it is advisable to check the weather forecast and dress appropriately. Unlike Ascot not many women dress up to be noticed and photographed, it has a more relaxed atmosphere. However in the members enclosure is more formal. Whatever you wear you can be sure to feel relaxed as there is such a wide range of visitors, from the many corporate guests, some arriving by helicopter, to local people just there for an enjoyable day. It is also worth remembering that Cheltenham Gold Cup is an all ticket event. It is hoped that there is no repeat of the theft of the 1998 winners Charter Party cup being stolen.

The Trainer Paul Nicholls has won the race twice recently with Denman and Kauto Star, but was beaten in 2010 by Imperial Commander who won trained by Nigel Twiston-Davies.

TUESDAY 15TH MARCH CENTENERY DAY The opening day of the Cheltenham Festival with the Champion Hurdle at 3.20pm as the main race on the day. The Supreme Novices Hurdle opens the festival at 1.30pm followed by the Arkle Challenge Trophy at 2.05pm., With racing finishing with the David Nicholson Mares Hurdle at 4.40pm. Six great races on the first day of the Cheltenham Gold Cup Festival brings alive the great atmosphere of the Cheltenham Festival.
WEDNESDAY 16 TH MARCH LADIES DAY Day two of the Cheltenham Festival race sees seven events including the Champion Bumper which is a flat race, with the center stage event being the Queen Mother Chase, always a popular event with the bookmakers. A new addition to day 2 Cheltenham Festival races is the National Hunt Novice Chase, and the Coral Cup strong with the Irish later in the day at 4.00pm.
THURSDAY 17TH MARCH ST PATRICKS DAY The third day of the Cheltenham festival features the Ladbrokes World Hurlde at 3.20pm. There is a new race this year the Jewson Novices' Handicap Steeple Chase the first race of the day at 1.30pm.With the Kim Muir Challenge Cup being the last race of the day at 4.40pm
FRIDAY 18TH MARCH THE CHELTENHAM GOLD CUP The final day of the Cheltenham Festival with the main race of the Cheltenham Festival the Cheltenham Gold Cup at 3.20pm taking center stage, to see who will win the 2011 Cheltenham Gold Cup will it be Kauto Star, Denman or Imperial Commander who won the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2010. The race is a Class 1, Grade 3, event over four miles and four furlongs. It is open to six-year-olds and upwards which are allotted a rating of 110 or more by the BHA Head of Handicapping.
