Cheltenham Spa

In the early 18th century the local population of Cheltenham had noticed that pigeons were pecking at salt deposits near a spring at the south side of the town. Belief grew that the water had healing powers for all types of ailments and illnesses.  During the years 1738 – 1742 a local man who owned the spring developed the spring into a well. He then built assembly rooms at the site where local gentry could play cards and attend lavish balls. In 1740 a man called Doctor Short praised the water in his book which led to an increasing number of visitors to the spa town. In 1788 King George III visited the town increasing its popularity further. The volume of visitors was now such that the original well could not cope and so a new well had to be found. Several new spas were opened between 1801 and 1825 including Montpellier and Sherborne.

During this time the popularity of the town meant that the population had increased dramatically from 3000 in 1801 to 35000 in 1851. The importance of the spas were in decline by the end of the 19th century but by then Cheltenham was firmly established as a tourist destination with its glorious setting in the heart of the Cotswolds. Today the popularity of Cheltenham as a tourist destination is as strong as ever with its regency architecture and fine selection of hotels and restaurants. The town is also now a popular student destination accompanied by the distinction of Cheltenham Ladies College.
