NHS Dentists in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire

In recent times many people in Cheltenham have found it hard to find an NHS dentist in Cheltenham, or the Cotswolds; with many practices having waiting lists. Many people are unaware that they don’t have to register with their closest dentist; so if you live in Cirencester but work in Cheltenham you may find it may be more convenient to register with an NHS dentist in Cheltenham. With the opening of several new dental practices in the county which will increase patient capacity by over 17,000, and with an additional two planned openings later in the year it should be much easier to find an NHS dentist to register with in Gloucestershire.

However even when they find a dentist in Cheltenham or Cirencester, many people complain that they cannot afford the charges. A recent survey found that up to 40% of the UK population who had to pay for their checkups and NHS treatment said that they cannot afford it. NHS dentists in Cheltenham charge the same as an NHS dentist in Cirencester as their charges are fixed nationally. Costs are banded depending on the treatment that you require, these charges are national .

There are three bands to cover all treatments that you may need.  Prices September 2011

NHS Dental Treatment in Cheltenham Dentist- Band 1 costs £17:

This includes an examination, diagnosis and advice from your dentist.

If necessary, it will also include x-rays a scale and polish of your teeth and planning for further treatment. 

NHS Dental Treatment in Cheltenham - Band 2 costs £47:

This includes all the treatment covered by Band 1, plus additional treatment, such as fillings, root canal treatment and removing of teeth if necessary (extractions). 

NHS Dental Treatment in Cheltenham - Band 3 costs £204:

In this band all treatment covered by Bands 1 and 2 are included, plus more complex procedures which require work possibly performed by a dental laboratory, such as crowns, dentures and bridges.

In some cases you may need more treatment within two months of completing a course of treatment. If you do need more treatment from the same charge band or a lower one, for example another filling, you don't have to pay anything extra.

Once two months has elapsed, there are additional charges applied.

When you require an emergency dentist/urgent treatment/out of hours treatment in Cheltenham

If you require emergency treatment, Band 1 charge of £17applies. Most urgent treatments can be dealt with in a single appointment. Different NHS dentists in Cheltenham will have different procedures regarding out of hours dental treatment in Cheltenham

Procedures where there is no charge

There are some procedures that are not chargeable including removing stitches, stopping bleeding and writing a prescription out although normal charges apply for collecting the prescription  

Free Dental treatment

Under certain circumstances NHS dental treatment is free.

The most common criteria for this is that if you are under 18 years old or under 19 years old and in full-time education.
