The green bin is provided for non-recyclable waste only.

From 4 April 2011 green refuse bins will be emptied every two weeks, alternating with the Cheltenham Borough Council green recycling box collections.

Green bins should be left at the kerbside by 7am for collection.

Items not to be put in Green Household waste bins.

  • sharp objects, needles
  • hazardous waste, including oils and chemicals
  • stones, gravel, rubble, builders' waste
  • garden waste, soil
  • DIY materials, such as construction waste, tiles, paint and paint tins
  • electrical goods
  • waste generated from businesses 

Collection dates

Check out your bin collection day in Cheltenham.

After a bank holiday week, refuse is normally collected one day later.

Christmas/New Year period. Specific arrangements are made.

You cannot purchase additional wheeled bins.

Residents also use all recycling facilities available to them.in Cheltenham and Gloucestershire. Such as Swindon Road Recycling in Cheltenham

Swindon Road recycling centre is for the disposal of household waste. 

Vans are not permitted. Small household trailers are accepted but must not be detached from the vehicle, items must be liftable.  Staff on site are happy to assist with unloading where required.

Opening hours

  • Monday to Friday - 7.30am to 7.30pm (summer) and 7.30am to 6.30pm (winter )
  • Saturdays - 7.30am to 4.00pm
  • Sundays and bank holidays - 9.00am to 1.00pm

Items that cannot be disposed of at the Recycling Centre:

  • trade waste
  • hazardous waste including asbestos
  • commercial waste
  • tyres
  • DIY and builders' rubble, including asbestos
  • clinical waste
  • car parts
  • gas bottles
  • mattresses
  • tyres
  • paint
  • animal waste

For items that aare not recycleable to deposit materials for recycling or composting and have a large load, you can use the county council civic amenity site. The site is more facilities and capacity to receive large loads of household waste. The civic amenity site accepts types of waste that cannot be disposed of at Swindon Road Recycle centre such as DIY rubble.

County Council amenity site is located at Wingmoor Farm, west of Bishop's Cleeve heading to Stoke Orchard.

9.00am to 6.15pm all year round (except Christmas Day and New Year's Day)

Vans and trailers

It is law that household recycling centres in the UK cannot accept any business waste. A booking system is in place to reduce the amount of trade waste deposited at the site.

You will need to book an appointment to bring a van, pick-up or vehicle with a trailer to any of Gloucestershire County Council's household recycling centres. Small trailers with a load space of up to 6 feet by 4 feet do not need to book.

Vehicles can be booked into the amenity site by calling 0845 602 9344 (9am to 5pm Monday to Friday)

24 hours notice is required, along with  Proof of residency.
