History of St Edward's School Cheltenham
Charlton Park, where the school now stands was origionally a hunting lodge belonging to King Edward the Confessor (1003-1066). In 1935 the property was adopted by a religious Order, the sisters of La Sainte Union, originally from France, who established a convent in the house and added additional buildings for classrooms. Charlton Park Roman Catholic school for girls was originaly opened in 1939.
A Catholic school for boys in the Cheltenham area was met in 1958 when the Carmelite order of priests and brothers acquired another historic site, Ashley House, under a mile a way on the London road Cheltenham , where they opened Whitefriars School. The two schools had many links. For some years Catholic children who passed their 11+ were awarded places at the schools by the local education authority, as the schools expanded additional buildings have been added on both sites.
Pupil numbers fell In the 1980's, so the parents at Whitefriars and Charlton Park were very keen that the Catholic Christian education should continue. A new lay-run trust was set up in the 1980's , and St Edward's School was created as a fully independent school. The main school for 11-18year olds was established on the the Charlton Park site, and the Whitefriars school was established as St Edward's Junior School for 2½ -11 year olds.
St Edward's Catholic School has become a well established school over the years. In 2008 a major new block has been added, the Abbott Building (named after the first Chairman of the St Edward's School Trust), was opened providing additional classrooms, a large spacious new Refectory, and a Drama Studio.
